Moscheles: ‘I found some of my hearers listening with deep devotion [Beethoven’s Sonatas Op. 109 and 111], while at my own house artists seem comparatively indifferent; some certainly are moved, while others are scared by the extravagances of the master, and do not recover their equanimity until I favour them with the more intelligible D minor Sonata’.
