Reviews

The Globe and Traveller (May 27, 1831): 2.

HUMMEL’S CONCERT.—This celebrated composer gave his second Concert yesterday morning, displaying his talents on the pianoforte in a quintetto! With Mori, Moralt, Lindley, and Wilson, and afterwards in Mozart’s celebrated Duetto with Moscheles, in which both were so excellent that it was difficult to decide for superiority. He also gave an extemporaneous performance, the subject of which was a pair of “Vadasi via di qua,” which has just been sung by Miss Cramer, Dion, and De Begnis. Miss Inverarity sang Spohr’s “Rose softly blooming,” in which she was encored. A considerable number of other vocalists delighted the audience by their exertions on this occasion; and this rich treat to the musical world was concluded with an air and variations on the violoncello, by Mr. Franco Mendes—a fantasia on the oboe, by Mr. Malsch—and a Duetto, by Miss Cramer and De Begnis.

The Morning Post (May 27, 1831): 3.

HUMMEL’S CONCERT.

This eminent composer gave his Second Concert yesterday morning, and displayed his talents on the Pianoforte, first, in a Quintetto with MORI, MORALT, LINDLEY, and WILSON; then in Mozart’s celebrated Duetto with MOSCHELES, who divided the honours with him; and lastly in an extemporaneous performance, taking for his first subject a few bars of “Vadasi via di qua,” (which had been just sang by Miss CRAMER, DIONO, and DE BEGNIS, and encored). This he worked in the mast masterly manner; then brought in “Laci darem,” and after that a Chorus of HANDEL’S—winding the whole up with a most brilliant coda. Miss CRAMER sang a very sweet Ballad, written by E. TAYLOR, and composed by HUMMEL. Miss INVERARITY was encored in SPOHR’S “Rose softly blooming,” PARRY, jun. was greatly applauded in “Oh! ’Tis the melody,” which he sang, accompanying himself on the Harp. Miss MASSON sang with great expression, “Soave imagine;” also a Duet with DIONO, who made his first bow before an English audience on this occasion: he possesses a good tenor voice, and sings with much taste. Mr. FRANCO MENDES performed an Air with Variations on the Violoncello; he has a good deal of execution and taste, but his tone is poor; he had the honour of having the first Violoncello player in Europe performing a humble Bass behind him, a condescension which reflects credit on the liberal feelings of the LINDLEY. Mr. MALSCH, of her MAJESTY’S Band, played a Fantasia on the Oboe; his tone is very round and mellew [sic], and his execution distinct. Miss CRAMER threw great spirit into the Duo, “Io di tutto,” with DE BEGNIS, who, as usual, drew largely on the risibility of the company.

The Spectator (May 28, 1831): 520.

On Thursday, HUMMEL had a second concert; which, we are grieved to say, was, like the first, so badly attended, that it wold hardly defray his expenses, small, comparatively speaking, as they are. MOZART’S grand duet for two pianofortes was played by HUMMEL and MOSCHELES, in a style of absolute perfection, and was worth many entire concerts of ordinary materials. But the public require variety of attraction; and HUMMEL, great as he is, must submit to act on this principle, if he wishes to fill his room.

Revue Musicale, vol. 11 (June 4, 1831): 144 .
