Reviews
The Morning Post (June 2, 1829): 3.
ARGYLL ROOMS.
Mr. and Madame SCHUTZ had their benefit Concert yesterday evening at these rooms, though the latter we believe is not at present in London. There was nevertheless considerable attraction in the performances of several established favourites, and others, who from their merits are likely soon to become so. Madame ROSNER, Maddle. SCHWEITZER, and Mr. VELLANER, who on this occasion made their debuts before an English audience, produced very favourable impressions. The first mentioned in particular possesses an exceedingly fine voice, with a very animated and correct style, both of which she displayed to much advantage in an air from the Zauberflotte, with German words. Messrs. SCHUTZ and ROSNER acquitted themselves very creditably. SONTAG, PISARONI, VELLUTI, CURIONI, &c. assisted, and it is needless to say more than that they performed in their usual style of excellence. MOSCHELES, WILLMAN, and the Signori GAMBATI, added to the pleasures of the evening by the display of their unrivalled powers on their respective instruments.

ARGYLL-ROOMS.
Mr. and Madame Schütz had their benefit concert at these rooms last night. With the exception of Madame Schütz who did not appear, the whole of Mr. Schütz’s German operatic company performed. Of Mr. Rosner’s singing we have already spoken in the terms of commendation to which it is so justly entitled. Madame Rosner, whom we heard last night for the first time, is a very finished singer, but her voice (a soprano) has a touch of shrillness in some of its tones, which her art has not been able to overcome. Mademoiselle Schwcitzer (also a soprano) has a fine voice, remarkable for its power, but she has much to learn with respect to its management. Her executon is very unfinished, and she has an unpleasing habit of audibly drawing in her breath. Mademoiselle Sontag engrossed, as she always does, the whole admiration of the audience. She sang a duet with Velluti, and a solo aria, and though frequently annoyed by a trouble, some cough, no degree of hoarseness was perceptible in her voice. The singing was chiefly in German, and among the performances was the sestetto in Don Giovanni, “In des abends stillen schätten;” in the Italian version—“Sola, sola inbujo loco palpitar,” which was sung by Mesdames Resner, Nina Sontag, and Schweitzer, and Messrs. Rosner, Schütz, and Vellaner. In the course of the evening Moschelles performed his fantasia “on the strains of the Scottish Bards.” The room was no crowded as might have been expected from the attractive nature of the performances.
