Reviews

The Standard (May 19, 1829): 1.

KING’S THEATRE.

The concert room adjoining this theatre was last night filled with a numerous and fashionable company, at a musical entertainment for the benefit of Mr. Mori. It was a grand treat indeed; as besides an excellent selection of music, both vocal and instrumental; from the first masters, there was the additional attraction of the most brilliant stars that have shone together for a long time in this country. The beautiful terzetto, “Le faccio un inchino,” sung by Mesdames Camporese, Pisaroni, and Mademoiselle Blasis, in their usual style, was but a prelude to the still finer performances which followed. Maddle. Sontag and Madame Malibran sang together the duetto “Ebben a te ferisci” with all that spirit and effect which a consciousness of rivalry and excellence can impart.  Madame Stockhausen sang a delightful little Swiss air, accompanied on the harp by Monsieur Stockhausen, in a sweet and pleasing manner; and in every respect characteristic of the original simplicity and scenes which dictated it. The same lady sung [sic] the Tyrolean airs in duo with M. Malibran with the most distinguished effect. They called forth the most unequivocal applause, and are to be repeated accordingly at Madame Stockhausen’s approaching benefit. Mori himself performed a concerto on the violin with the most extraordinary correctness of execution, and was highly applauded.—Donzelli’s “Il Miotesoro” was also very fine. On the whole it was a very splendid entertainment; but somewhat too long; for harmony itself becomes irksome to most people if kept up beyond a certain time.

The Times (May 19, 1829): 3.

CONCERT ROOM, KING’S THEATRE.—Mr. Mori gave last night his annual benefit concert in this room. Mr Mori’s concerts are always given on such a grand scale, and are so sure to be over-crowded, that it is a matter of some surprise he does not choose a more spacious room to give them in than he has hitherto fixed upon. On the present occasion, Mr. Mori was aided in the instrumental department by the powerful cooperation of a very full orchestra, composed of the most eminent professors in London, and by Messrs. Moschelles and Labarre, as solo performers. One of Kreutzer’s most classical concertos was selected by Mr. Mori for his own performance, as well as a new Polonaise of Mayseder. In both pieces he met with abundant opportunities for the display of his powers of execution. Mr. Mori also led a septet of Beethoven, in a masterly manner. Mademoiselle Sontag, Madame Camporese, Madame Pisaroni, Mademoiselle Blasis, Madame Malibran, Madame Stockhausen, and Miss Wilkinson, were among the leading vocalists on the occasion, assisted by Signori Donzelli, De Begnis, Zuchelli, and others. The long list of performances was closed with Weber’s splendid overture to Euryanthe.

The Morning Post (May 21, 1829): 3.

At MORI’S Concert, given on Monday evening in the King’s Concert Room, Miss WILKINSON sang the favourite popular air of “O bid thy faithful Ariel fly,” which she executed with her usual exquisite taste and feeling, and in which she was rapturously encored. After fulfilling her part in the Concert, this charming songstress left town on a visit to Lady DARNLEY.

The Morning Post (May 26, 1829): 2.

MR. MORI’S CONCERT.—In consequence of the very crowded and brilliant attendance at Mori’s Concert on Monday evening last, and  from the fact, that nearly 500 persons were unable to procure tickets (their  numbers being limited of our talented countryman to have his next Benefit Concert in  the ample space of the KING’S Theatre. This goes far to prove that native talent, where it exists in perfection, in not after all neglected or unencouraged.

The Harmonicon, vol. VII (June 1829): 147.

Mr. MORI’S,

Concert Rooms, King’s Theatre, Monday, May 18th.

Every corner of the room was filled, and the performance lasted upwards of four hours. In fact, almost every singer in London was present, and each had something to do. In addition to these, Mr. Moscheles on the piano-forte, Puzzi on the horn, and Labarre on the harp, played concertos. Mori performed admirably a concerto made up from Krëutzer and Mayseder, and likewise the principal part in Beethoven’s septet. The number of pieces amounted to twenty-one; and most, if not all, the vocal compositions had been sung over and over again during the present season. Who can wonder, therefore, that the public are at length beginning to be content with hearing one benefit concert in a season, or two at the utmost?
