CONCERT.— ILKLEY CHARITY BATH.—We beg to call the attention of our readers to the above Concert, particulars of which will be found in another part of our paper. The Committee have used their utmost exertions procuring the best possible talent at the most reasonable expense. The entire Band of the Tenth Hussars, under the direction of Mr. Tucker, late of the King’s Household Band, will open the entertainment with a grand military performance. The attendance of Mrs. P. Atkinson, than whom a more accomplished singer is rarely to be heard, being decidedly the best in that style of music for which Mrs. Salmon was so justly distinguished, will give universal satisfaction. Of the talents of Monsieur Moscheles we need say nothing—his merit as a performer on the Piano-forte and as a Composer, is already duly appreciated; and the Committee, in making such a selection, have, we doubt not, anticipated the wishes of the ladies. Mr. Sapio is confidently expected, whose engagements will, are given to understand, be concluded in time for the above Concert. The cooperation of the gentlemen of the Leeds Amateur Society must greatly add to the effect of the orchestra, and the excellent institution on behalf of which the Concert is given, countenanced as it is by the eminent professional talent of Leeds, will be the means greatly increasing the attendance on so interesting an occasion.

Reviews

The Leeds Intelligencer (February 17, 1831): 3.

CONCERT.— ILKLEY CHARITY BATHS.—The Concert for the benefit of the Ilkley Charity Baths took place Tuesday night, and was brilliantly attended—the saloon and gallery were both crowded. The entertainment was altogether one of the most satisfactory given in Leeds for years past—satisfactory as regards the talent engaged, the exertions made by the Committee to procure a numerous and respectable attendance, and the enthusiastic manner in which the public approbation was expressed. The Concert was commenced by the whole military band, executing, in a most masterly style, Mehul’s Overture to Joseph, under the direction of Mr. Tucker. On no occasion were the talents of Mrs. Peter Atkinson more duly appreciated, or displayed to greater advantage; and the pleasure we derived was not diminished by the reflection that Mrs. Atkinson is a neighbour of our own, and in her private character an example and ornament to her profession. She was deservedly encored in two of her songs. Mr. Moscheles made his appearance for the first time in Leeds, and his performance perfectly electrified the audience. His two grand Fantasia, Recollections of Ireland, and Anticipations of Scotland, were listened to with profound attention; and his Extemporaneous Fantasia was received with a burst of applause, and rapturously encored. Although we extremely regret the unavoidable absence of Mr. Sapio, his place was most successfully supplied by the Gentlemen Amateurs and we know not whether most to admire, the effective and impressive manner in which “Arm, arm, ye brave” was sung [sic]by Mr. Beeston, or the chaste and pleasing style of Mr. Nicholson’s execution of the “Soldier’s Tear.” It always gives us pleasure to speak of old friends, and to encourage native talent. We never saw Mr. White lead [sic] with greater advantage; and his exertions were well seconded by the gentlemen of the Band generally, most of whom rendered gratuitous assistance. The brilliant appearance of the room, and the spirit manifested throughout, forcibly reminded us of other times, when the Leeds Concerts were in their glory. We are not enabled at present to state the amount of benefit conferred on the Charity. We understand that many donations have been received, and that others are promised: till the ratter come in, therefore, the accounts cannot be made up; but we anticipate that the surplus will least reach £50.
