Reviews

The Morning Post (June 22, 1830): 3.

HUMMEL’S FAREWELL CONCERT.

This eminent Professor’s third and last Concert look place yesterday morning at the Opera Concert Room which was completely crowded; no less than 151 admissions were paid for at the doors, exclusively of about 600 tickets sold. The vocalists were Madame MALIBRAN and Miss CRAMER, Master PHILLIPS, of the Royal Academy, LABLACHE, PIOZZI, and DE BEGNIS, who sung [sic] a variety of popular pieces.

HUMMEL performed the Pianoforte part of his own Septette in D minor in a most finished style of excellence; he also gave a Rondo Brillante with exquisite taste and neatness of execution, and performed MOZART’S Grand Sonata with MOSCHELES, for the third time, with undiminished spirit and effect. His extemporaneous performance was truly wonderful; he appeared as it inspired, for his whole soul wrapt in the flow of harmony which he produced from the instrument. A Concertante Duet, violin and harp, by DE BERIOT and Miss BISSET, was well performed, but the composition was very indifferent, and totally unworthy of the Violinist’s superior talents. MORI led a select Band, and Sir GEORGE SMART conducted.

MR. HUMMEL’S FAREWELL CONCERT.

Yesterday afternoon this celebrated pianist took his farewell benefit at the Great Concert Room, King’s Theatre, under the immediate patronage of her Royal Highness the Duchess of Clarence. The company assembled on the occasion was evidently composed of the higher classes of society, the Haymarket and streets adjacent to the King’s Theatre being filled with carriages.

The performances commenced with a grand septetto, which was very spiritedly executed, and obtained its full meed of approbation. Next followed, a cavatina by Mozart, very sweetly sung by Miss Cramer; a [*] next the favourite duetto by Rossini, “D’un bell’ usio in Turchio,” from Il Turco in Italia, next excellently and numerously sung [sic] by Signors Lablache and De Begnis. Mr. Hummel’s rondo brilliant met with decided success; and the first part was very triumphantly concluded by a laughable duet, of Donzelli’s, in which Lablache, and particularly Madame Malibran, greatly distinguished themselves—the later, in receiving a lesson from her master, proved herself no inapt scholar. She imitated to perfection every variety of tone and musical expression of which, perhaps, the human voice is susceptible. This performance was highly and deservedly applauded. The second part commenced with an instrumental performance by Miss E. Bisset on the harp accompanied by Mons. De Beriot on the violin. Our readers are [*] aware that this gentleman’s performances are very celebrated; it is almost needless, therefore, to [*] [*], [*] this occasion he afforded great delight, which was testified by loud applause; nor should we [*] ourselves of injustice were to deny to Miss Bisset her duo share of it. Master Phillips, a pupil of the Royal Academy of Music, sung [sic], by permission of its committee, Attwood’s “Marnton and Yaratildu” with great sweetness and feeling. Martini’s terzetto, “Vulasi viu di qua,” by Miss Cramer and Signors Piozzi and De Begnis, elicited great laughter and applause. But what was looked forward to with [*] expectation, and listened to with most delight, is [*] likely, perhaps to the heard again to the same perfection, was Mozart’s celebrated sonata for two pianofortes, by Mr. Hummel and Mr. Moscheles; nor, seemingly, was ever anxiety or expression more amply gratified, for great and unanimous was the applause which rewarded the exertions of these two most eminent pianists. A new Tyrolesian air, with variations, by Mr. Hummel, was most exquisitely sung [sic] by Madame Malibran. An “extemporaneous performance on the pianoforte,” which afforded Mr. Hummel further opportunity for the display of his extraordinary skill on this instrument, concluded the concert which, as a whole, was a treat of the highest order. The orchestra was not numerous, but composed of efficient members, as a slight enumeration will show:—Violin, Mori (leader); double bass, violoncello, Dragonetti; violoncello, Lindley; flute, Nicholson ; and conductor, Sir G. Smart.

                                               Mr. HUMMEL’S FAREWELL CONCERT

was given, under the patronage of the Duchess of Clarence, at the Concert Room of the King’s Theatre, on Monday morning, June 21st; but such was the desire to hear him, as it was likely that no other opportunity would be presented, that the room was filled soon after the opening of the doors. So crowded, indeed, was every part, and so blocked up were the avenues, that though we attended before the performance commenced, we could obtain no admission, therefore have only to state, from the programme, that M. Hummel played his own sestet in D minor; a rondo brilliant; the duet of Mozart for two piano-fortes, with M. Moscheles; and that he concluded with an extemporaneous performance.
