Reviews

The Morning Post (May 8, 1830): 3.

MR. F. CRAMER’S CONCERT.

We were glad to find this highly-respectable Professor’s Concert well attended last night, also to see his old friends rally round him in that Orchestra where he has been leader for so many years, and his father before him. Miss CRAMER, in Cruda sorte, evinced great improvement, both in power and the management of her voice, since last season; she is well-grounded in a good school, and may, at no distant period, rank high among our vocalists. VAUGHAN sung [sicAlexis in his best manner; LINDLEY’s accompaniment was inimitably performed. Miss STEPHENS and Mr. PHILLIPS were prevented from affording that assistance they were anxious to give, on account of the new Opera at Drury-Lane; but the former sang, Gin living worth most feelingly, and in that expressive manner which has long established her reputation as the best singer of the day in the ballad style. PHILLIPS sang with his usual good taste. Mr. PARRY, jun. made his first public, appearance as a concert singer, making choice of HANDEL’s fine song, Arm. arm, ye brave, which he gave with a clear enunciation and sonorous quality of tone that hold forth fair promise of his becoming a very superior singer. He possesses an advantage which many vocalists want, that of playing on the harp and pianoforte, so as to accompany himself on either. Under the friendly and kind auspices of Mr. BRAHAM, with perseverance and study, we have no hesitation in predicting that he will become an ornament to the musical profession. The instrumental pieces were BEETHOVEN’S fine Sinfonia in D, MOZART’S in E flat, A. ROMBERG’S celebrated Overture, and the Overture to the Zauberflote, a Quartet of HAYDN’S by Messrs. CRAMER, SEYMOUR, MORALT, and LINDLEY, all of which were admirably performed.

MOSCHELES delighted the audience with his masterly performance of the Anticipations of Scotland on the pianoforte; as did LINDLEY in the difficult accompaniment to Batti Batti, which was sweetly sung [sic] by Mrs. W. KNYVETT.

At Mr. F. Cramer’s, on the preceding week, we have to notice the very successful début of a native artist, young Parry, the son of our favourite Welsh composer and flageoletist. He sang in a good English style, and was much applauded.

Mr. F. CRAMER’S,

King’s Concert Rooms, Hanover Square, Friday Evening,

May 7th.

This was an excellent concert, on the plan of the Philharmonic, but with more vocal music. The symphony in D, by Beethoven, that in E, by Mozart, Romberg’ s overture in D, and Mozart’s to the Zauberflöte; together with a fantasia on the piano-forte by Moscheles, and a lovely quartet by Haydn, charmingly performed by Messrs. F. Cramer, Seymour, Moralt, and Lindley, constituted the instrumental portion of this concert. A new singer, with a good base voice, Mr. Parry, junior, a son of the Cambrian bard, made his first appearance on this occasion, in “Arm, arm, ye brave!” which he executed in a manner that may justify very sanguine expectations of his future success: a more promising debut has rarely been witnessed.
