Reviews

The Morning Post (May 24, 1834): 3.

MR. MORI’S CONCERT

We were much pleased to find the King’s Theatre Concert Room crowded to excess yesterday evening, on the occasion of Mr. MORI’S Concert, and that he enjoys the patronage not only of numbers but of rank and fashion was evident from the throng of carriages in the Haymarket, presenting all the appearance of an Opera night. This must be more particularly gratifying to our eminent professor when he looks to the host of foreign talent with which he has to contend; we may, however, confidently assert that, in whatever degree foreign competition may be dreaded in certain branches of trade or otherwise, in the article of violin-playing at least with MORI among us, there can be no cause for fear, nor need he desire to see any protective duty imposed on this description of foreign produce. In a word, whether we regard him as a sound legitimate concerto-player, or as the leader of an orchestra, Mori has no superior, and but few equals; and the more frequently he is heard the more his hearers must be confirmed in this opinion. He had last night the good discrimination to chose for his principal performance BEETHOVEN’S celebrated concerto, so much admired as the Philharmonic. He went through it in the same splendid style as on the former occasion, and elicited approbation not less marked and general. He also, performed a concerto of MAYSEDER’S in E minor; and took part in a concertante piece for four violins with Messrs. SEYMOUR, TOLBECQUE and ELIASON. The novelty of this latter performance excited much interest. The other instrumental pieces were a very clever “Mosaique Musicale” by BOCHSA, introducing his new harp effects; and the duet on two pianofortes by MOSCHELES and HERZ, as given at the Concert of the latter, and which admirably displays the respective styles of these highly-celebrated masters. Among the vocalists PHILLIPS was encored in an antique ballad of the date 1656, entitled Woman, which he sang with his usual judgment. IVANOFF exhibited great taste and purity of style in air by DONIZETTI, and in his celebrated Vivi tu. We exceedingly admire his mode of singing arias of this description, calling for delicacy and expression; and the British musical public appear equally to appreciate him; he has made rapid way in the estimation of our amateurs, and now enjoys, a high reputation, not higher, we will add, than well merited. STOCKHAUSEN, always delightful, was encored in a French bolero, executed with the neatness and brilliancy peculiar to her; and CARADORI, DE BEGNIS, ZUCHELLI, RUBINI, Miss MASSON, &c., contributed to the general excellence of this Concert.

The Courier (May 26, 1834): 3.

MR. MORI’S CONCERT.—The concert given by this highly talented violinist on Friday evening, at the King’s Theatre, was mot fashionably and fully attended, and, as usual, the entertainment provided was of the richest description. Severe indisposition deprived the company of the magnificent powers of Grisi, whose absence was compensated for by additional exertions on the parts of Madame Caradori, Ivanoff, Rubini, Zuchelli, and De Begnis. Phillips was warmly encored in a ballad by Withers, in 1656, entitled “Woman,” as was Madame Stockhausen, in a new bolero by Dessauer, called “Ouvrez, Ouvrez.” Mori excelled any of his former efforts on this occasion, by his exquisite performance of a Concerto in E minor, by Mayseder, and a Concerto by Beethoven. In the execution of each of these compositions, the absolute master of his instrument and of his subject was manifest at every bar. The next instrumental treat was on the harp, by Bochsa. On this occasion he introduced a number of his new effects which created a feeling of astonishment as well as of pleasure, and he might be truly denominated the “Paganini of the Harp.” A duet Concertante for two piano-fortes, by Herz and Moscheles, was likewise a performance of first rate excellence. A Concertante for four violins was beautifully played by Mori, Eliason, Seymour, and Tolbecque. The vocal portion of the amusements was admirably sustained by Mesdames Caradori and Stockhausen, H. R. Bishop and E. Seguin, Miss Mason and Miss Clara Novello, and by Signori Rubini, Ivanhoff, Zuchelli, and De Begnis, and Mr. H. Phillips. Taking the concert altogether, making duo allowance for the absence of Grisi, this is the best we have visited this season.

Supplement to the Musical Library (July 1834): 45.

MR. MORI’S, Concert Room, King’s Theatre, May 23d.—An excellent selection of music, though certainly rather too much of it, supported by nearly all the principal performers, foreign and British, now in the metropolis. Mr. Mori played a new concerto, in E minor, of Mayseder, one of the best of that composer’s works, in an admirable manner; and the first movement of the concerto by Beethoven, which he so successfully performed at a Philharmonic Concert this season. Messrs. Moscheles and Herz executed a new duet-concertante on two piano fortes, composed by the latter, in which whatever can be done by nimbleness of finger was accomplished. But our report must here terminate, for the room was so crowded that it was with great difficulty we found space enough to stand and to hear what we have now noticed.
